"Francesco was an excellent guide. We enjoyed his tutorial regarding all aspects about Mt. Etna as well as Taormina. The lunch at the vineyard was also excellent and such a nice relaxed location to enjoy the countryside and others on our tour. We enjoyed the entire day and highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Catania."

Catania to Taormina
Coach, Train or Day Trip
Fares and journey times for the trip on your own, and what each day tour leaves you in Taormina.
If the theatre is the reason you are going, take the coach. Etna Trasporti and Interbus run from Catania airport to Taormina for €7 single or €14 return, and they stop at the Via Pirandello terminal in the upper town, so you start walking from the right level. Pay the €14 gate price (checked November 2026) and you can stay as long as you like.
If you also want Etna, book the Etna and Taormina day trip with lunch. The shared group costs from about $106 per person (checked November 2026), it rates 4.9/5 from 618 reviews, and it collects you from your Catania hotel. The trade-off is time: you get 1.5 hours on your own in Taormina, theatre entry is not included, and in winter the theatre may be close to closing when you arrive. Our review has the detail.
Getting there on your own
| Route | Fare | Typical journey | Where you arrive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coach, Catania airport to Taormina (Etna Trasporti ET07, Interbus IN14) | €7 single, €14 return | about 80–90 min | Via Pirandello terminal, in town |
| Train, Catania airport to Taormina-Giardini | about €6.50 | about 49 min to 1 h 14 | Station at sea level |
| Train, Catania Centrale to Taormina-Giardini | about €5.50 regional, €8.50 Intercity | about 36 min to 1 h 08 | Station at sea level |
| ASM bus, station up to town | €2 single | about 10–15 min | Town centre |
| Taxi | no fixed fare | — | Agree the price before you set off |
The coach fares and the rail figures come from a transfer-booking site that checked them in August 2026, and the €2 bus fare is ASM’s own. Treat the journey times as typical and check the Interbus, Etna Trasporti or Trenitalia timetable for your date.
The coach suits anyone with luggage. The train suits a start in Catania city, from Catania Centrale, but Taormina-Giardini station sits at sea level in Giardini Naxos, and the town centre is about 200 metres higher. Do not try the climb with bags. The ASM Linea Verde and Taormina Link buses run from the station up to town, and our how to get there guide covers that last stretch.
Winter thins the coach timetable. On one sample weekday in mid-November the airport had 23 departures to Taormina, the last at 19:45, against 44 on a mid-August weekday, and there is no night service. If your flight lands late, check the timetable before you rely on the coach.
From the coach terminal, budget about 10 minutes on foot to the theatre. We found no official walking time, so check it on a map: you walk into Corso Umberto and then climb Via Teatro Greco, which has steps. Driving yourself? Visitors without a permit should park outside the old town’s limited-traffic zone; the parking guide lists the car parks.
Day trips from Catania that stop in Taormina
| Tour | Price (checked November 2026) | Time in Taormina | Theatre entry | Guiding |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Etna & Taormina Day Trip with Lunch | from about $106 per person (shared) | 1.5 h | Not included | Naturalist guide on Etna, Taormina on your own |
| Full-Day Etna & Taormina, Small Group | from about $106 per person | 1.5 h | Not included | Live guide, five languages |
| Etna & Taormina Combination Tour | about $112 per person | 2.5 h listed | Not included | Driver-guide, English, Spanish, Italian |
| Taormina, Savoca & Castelmola Day Trip | about $123 per person (group) | 2 h | Not stated | Driver only |
| Taormina & Castelmola from Catania | about $122 per person | 2 h, plus 2 h in Castelmola | Not included | Guide listed, reviewers say mostly driver |
None of the five includes the theatre ticket, so add €14 per adult at the gate. Visitors under 18 go in free. Reviewers of the audio-guide ticket report spending 30 to 60 minutes inside, which means 1.5 hours covers the theatre and a short walk along Corso Umberto, and little more.
If more time in town matters, the Etna and Taormina combination tour lists 2.5 hours in Taormina, though one reviewer got 2. The small-group Etna day has the most reviews of the five (4.8/5 from 812) and caps the group at eight; lunch is not included on it. Without Etna, the Savoca and Castelmola trips swap the volcano for hill villages and give you 2 hours in Taormina.
On a short stop, a pre-bought ticket helps. The Ancient Theatre ticket with audio guide costs about $25 per person (checked November 2026) against €14 at the gate. It saves the ticket-office queue, though you still pass the security check, and some reviewers had to swap a QR code at a window. The tickets page compares it with the gate ticket.
What to check before you book
Ask what time you reach Taormina. On the Etna and Taormina day trip with lunch, Taormina comes after the hike and lunch. The park’s page gives 9:00 to 19:45 with last entry at 19:00, but the theatre closes much earlier in winter: travel guides give about 16:00 from November to mid-February. Check the park’s notice for your date, and if the stop falls late in the afternoon, plan on seeing the theatre from the outside.
In summer, concert days can restrict access or shorten hours; the opening hours guide explains. Confirm your pickup point the day before, because some reviewers of the Castelmola trip from Catania had a different spot from the hotel they gave. The Etna day trips can be cancelled in bad weather, and the lunch tour offers another date or a full refund when that happens.
Arriving by ship rather than plane? Messina is the other common gateway, and the Messina cruise port page has the train and coach times from there.
For the walk from the station or coach stop to the theatre steps, read how to get there; to pick a day for the Etna trip, check dates.

What Travellers Say About the Etna and Taormina Day
Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide when checked in November 2026 and shift as new reviews arrive.
"Emiliano, guide and driver was very good at both. He was patient and knowledgeable regarding the volcano and vegetation . We had just the right amount of free time in Taormina. Full day, totally worth the cost of the excursion."
"We had a driver to pick us up and drop us off only. It would have been good if he could speak English and explain some stuff on our drive. The guide was very knowledgeable, funny and informative on our Mount Etna part of the trip. The lunch and wine was amazing! Good portion of cheese, meats, spinach cheese pastries, pasta and wine. Having a small group of 8 people made it easy to interact with everyone and enjoy their company. 2 hours in Taormina on self guided was too much time, it would have been nice to have a tour guide showing us the pretty town or leave this part out of excursion."
"very informative an collection/ drop off terrific - on time Our guide was very polite and escorted us up and down the hiking part of volcano park. enjoyed experience."
"A wonderful trip to Mount Etna and Taormina! Very well organised, with beautiful views, a friendly guide and a delicious lunch included. Mount Etna was truly impressive, and Taormina was absolutely charming. I definitely recommend it!"
"The food was amazing, the guide gave us a lot of information which was great. The trip to enta was amazing, the sightseeing is incredible. Very friendly crew"

Catania to Taormina: Common Questions
Coach, train, taxi and day trips, with the figures dated. Check the timetable for your own date.
The simplest way is the coach. Etna Trasporti (line ET07) and Interbus (IN14) belong to the same group and charge the same fare, €7 single or €14 return. The ride usually takes about 80 to 90 minutes and ends at the Via Pirandello terminal in Taormina's upper town, not at the railway station. These figures come from a transfer-booking site checked in August 2026, so confirm them on the operator's timetable.
Yes. Regional trains from Catania Centrale to Taormina-Giardini cost about €5.50 and Intercity trains about €8.50, with journeys from about 36 minutes to just over an hour. Trains also run from the airport station for about €6.50. The station is at sea level in Giardini Naxos, so you still need the ASM bus up to town (€2 single). See how to get there for that last stretch.
About 80 to 90 minutes by coach from the airport, or about 36 minutes to just over an hour by train from Catania Centrale plus about 10 to 15 minutes on the bus up from the station. Those are typical third-party figures. We have no verified driving time, so use a route planner if you drive, and allow extra time to park outside the old town.
We found no official fixed fare, and we have no checked price to quote. Agree the fare with the driver before you set off. If you travel light and land before the evening, the €7 coach is the budget option.
No. Every day trip from Catania we checked either excludes entrance tickets or does not mention theatre admission at all. Budget €14 per adult at the gate (checked November 2026); under-18s go in free. Read the tickets page for the pre-bought options.
Between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, depending on the tour. The Etna day trip with lunch and the small-group Etna day list 1.5 hours; the Etna and Taormina combination tour lists 2.5 hours, though one reviewer got 2; the Castelmola and Savoca trips give about 2 hours. Audio-guide ticket reviewers report 30 to 60 minutes inside the theatre.
Wikipedia describes Taormina as approximately a 45-minute drive from Etna, and we found no operator that publishes a firmer figure. The Etna and Taormina day trips on this page start from Catania and include the volcano, so you do not need to get to Etna on your own.
On one sample weekday in mid-November the last airport departure for Taormina was at 19:45, with no night service. Timetables change, so check Interbus or Etna Trasporti for your travel date before booking a late flight.
