"They were on time during pick up at the cruise port. Yana was very informative with all the attractions that we saw. The driver, Giuseppe was very good with kids. Both of them are great with families. They made us feel comfortable while having our tour. Highly recommended having them as your tour guide in Sicily."

Messina to Taormina
Getting from the Ship to the Theatre
Train and coach fares, the time each way, and which port your ship really uses.
If your ship docks at Messina and the theatre is what you want to see, take the train. Messina Centrale station is about 10 minutes on foot from the cruise terminal, a regional train to Taormina-Giardini costs about €5.50, and the ASM shuttle up to the town adds €2. You keep control of the day for under €20 return, plus the €14 gate price for the theatre (checked November 2026).
Book the private Messina cruise excursion to Taormina and Castelmola if you would rather not watch the clock on trains. A driver meets you at the dock, you get 1 hour in Castelmola and 2 hours in Taormina, and the car returns you to your ship’s gate. It is listed from about $133 per person, but our check found no bookable date through late January 2027: the operator appears to open dates around cruise calls, so check it against your ship’s day in port. It rates 5.0/5 from only 3 reviews, and the listing does not include theatre admission. Our review covers what it does include.
Train, coach or car from the Messina terminal
| Option | Cost | Time each way | Getting back |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regional train + ASM shuttle (Taormina Link) | about €7.50 each way | regional 39 min to 1 h 16, Intercity 34 min (€8.50), plus the shuttle | your own timing; check the return train |
| Interbus IN09 coach | €4.30 single, €6.80 return | about 50 min on fast runs, 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 on others | sample day’s last listed return from Taormina: 16:30 |
| Private shore excursion (1201068) | listed from about $133 per person | included in the 6-hour day | to your ship’s gate |
| Taxi | no checked fare; agree it first | — | arrange the return with the driver |
The fares, journey times and the coach timetable come from one transfer-booking site that checked them on a sample day in August 2026. The €2 shuttle add-on also appears on Trenitalia’s own page. Treat every time here as a guide and look up the Trenitalia or Interbus timetable for your date.
How long the whole trip takes is our own sum, not a published figure. Add the walk to Messina Centrale (10 to 15 minutes), the train (34 to 76 minutes), the shuttle from Taormina-Giardini up to town (about 10 to 15 minutes) and roughly 10 minutes on foot to the theatre, and you get about 1 to 2 hours each way before any wait for a connection. Inside, reviewers of the audio-guide ticket report 30 to 60 minutes. If your ship is in port for most of the day, the train leaves time for the theatre and a slow walk along Corso Umberto, as long as you aim to be back at the terminal well before all-aboard.
The road distance is about 40 km, a figure converted from a forum’s “25 miles”, so treat it as rough. Messina is north of Taormina; Catania is to the south. Port works also change the walk: works on a new Messina cruise terminal began on 28 May 2026, with completion scheduled for 5 September 2027, and some ships have moved to the Marconi quay. Ask the ship’s staff where you are tied up.
Where cruise ships call for Taormina
Ships that list “Taormina” on the itinerary call at Messina, Catania or Giardini Naxos, and your cruise documents name the port. From Messina, use this page. From Catania, the Catania page has the coach and train. Giardini Naxos is on the coast below Taormina, and the ASM Linea Gialla bus climbs to the centre; see how to get there. We could not confirm whether ships at Giardini Naxos dock or send passengers ashore by tender, so check with the cruise line.
Seeing the theatre in the time you have
Pre-book the ticket. The Ancient Theatre ticket with audio guide costs about $25 per person (checked November 2026), against €14 at the gate, and adds commentary in English, French, Spanish or German. It saves the ticket-office queue, which a Taormina blog says can run past an hour in high season, though you still go through the security check. It does not give you a separate entrance. Our tickets page sets out when the plain gate ticket is enough.
If you want a person to explain the place, the Taormina guided walking tour costs about $196 per group of up to four (checked November 2026). It runs 3 hours from Porta Catania to Porta Messina, with 1 hour at the theatre, but the entrance fee is extra, so buy that separately. It rates 4.6/5 from 47 reviews.
The Taormina and Castelmola private tour from Messina is the cheaper car option, listed from about $94 per person for a private group, though our scan found no bookable date. It comes with a driver, not a guide: an official guide costs extra on request, the Taormina stop is self-guided, and theatre admission is not included. It rates 5.0/5 from 9 reviews, a small sample.
Check before you book
Check your ship’s arrival and all-aboard times first, then the theatre’s hours for that date. The park’s page gives 9:00 to 19:45 with last entry at 19:00, but the theatre closes much earlier in winter: travel guides give about 16:00 from November to mid-February. In summer, concert days can restrict access or shorten hours. On a winter call, aim to reach the theatre by early afternoon.
On the shore excursion, the “skip the line through express security check” line refers to the port, not to the theatre queue. If your ship calls on the first Sunday of a month, entry to the theatre is free under the park’s rule, but tickets are issued on site only, so expect a queue and confirm the notice that month.
For the station-to-town shuttle and the walk up to the theatre, read how to get there; to match the excursion to your port day, check dates.

Messina Cruise Port to Taormina: Common Questions
Distances, trains, coaches and getting back to the ship. Check timetables for your own call date.
Roughly 40 km by road, a figure converted from a forum's 25 miles, so treat it as approximate. By train it is about 34 minutes on an Intercity or 39 minutes to 1 hour 16 on a regional train from Messina Centrale, which is about 10 minutes on foot from the cruise terminal. Fast Interbus coaches take about 50 minutes.
Walk to Messina Centrale, then take a train to Taormina-Giardini. The station sits at sea level, so you need the ASM shuttle up to town. The Taormina Link combination of train plus shuttle costs about €7.50 each way, €2 of it for the shuttle. Look up return trains on Trenitalia before you leave the station.
Yes, Interbus line IN09, at €4.30 single or €6.80 return. Fast runs take about 50 minutes and others 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45. On the one sample day we have, the last listed return from Taormina left at 16:30, which is early for a cruise passenger, so check the current timetable.
Yes, but we have no checked fare to quote. Agree the price, and the return pickup time, before you set off. For a fixed price that ends at your ship's gate, compare the private shore excursion, listed from about $133 per person.
Ships that list Taormina call at Messina, Catania or Giardini Naxos, and your itinerary names the port. Giardini Naxos is the closest, on the coast below the town, with an ASM bus up to the centre; we could not confirm whether ships there dock or use tenders. From Catania, see the Catania page.
Ask the cruise line what it guarantees if one of its own tours runs late. With the train or coach the timing is up to you. The independent private excursion on this page returns you to the ship's gate, but it has only 3 reviews so far and no dates showed in our check through late January 2027.
The listing does not include theatre admission. You get 2 hours of free time in Taormina, so buy a ticket yourself: €14 at the gate (checked November 2026) or about $25 for the ticket with an audio guide. The tickets page compares them.
Allow about 1 to 2 hours each way by train and shuttle (our sum of third-party times) and 30 to 60 minutes inside, the range audio-guide reviewers report. In winter the theatre closes much earlier than the official 19:45; travel guides give about 16:00, so check the park's notice. See how long to visit.
