Which Taormina Tour Takes You Inside
Theatre entry included or extra, time at the theatre and the price, tour by tour.
Only two of the Taormina tours we checked put the theatre ticket in the price. The cheaper is the theatre ticket with a guided tour, from about $34 per person (checked November 2026): entry plus a live guide inside for a listed 50 minutes. It is the pick if you want a person to explain the site and answer questions, and you can keep some slack in your day. It scores 4.0/5 from 452 reviews, and the low ones are consistent enough to plan around.
If you want the old town as well as the theatre, a private walk suits you better. Most of them leave the theatre ticket out, so add €14 per person at the gate (checked November 2026). If you mainly want to get in and hear the history, the audio-guide ticket at about $25 is cheaper and reviewed far more often.
Which tours include theatre entry
| Tour | Theatre entry | Time at the theatre | Guide | Price (checked Nov 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Theatre ticket with guided tour | Included | 50 min listed | Live, English or Italian | about $34 per person |
| Walking tour with theatre ticket | Included | 45 min | Live, EN/IT/FR/DE | about $196 per person (private option) |
| Private city sights walk | Not included, guide goes in | Not stated | Live, private, five languages | about $157 per person |
| Guided walking tour | Not included | 1 hour | Live, private, FR/EN/DE/ES | about $196 per group up to 4 |
| Historic private tour | Not included | 24 min | Live, private, EN/FR/DE/IT | about $179 per group up to 25 |
| Sunset walk with rooftop aperitif | No theatre stop | — | Live, EN/IT | about $157 per person |
Per-group prices cover the whole party, so the guided walking tour works out at about $49 each for four people, before the gate ticket.
The theatre-only tour: what reviewers report
The guided theatre tour meets at the Teatro Antico. Reviewers say you check in at the ticket office, where staff swap the voucher and send you to the group. The guide covers the Greek theatre of the 3rd to 2nd century BC, the Roman rebuild and the later conversion into an arena, with the sea and Etna behind the stage.
Many reviewers praise their guide. The complaints repeat, though: guides arriving late or not at all, groups booked in English that turned out to be shared with Italian speakers, and tours of 15 to 40 minutes against the 50 listed. There is no audio handset on this tour. Book it for a morning with nothing fixed straight after, and read our full review before you choose.
Private walks through the old town
The Taormina guided walking tour runs about three hours from Porta Catania to Porta Messina, with an hour at the theatre, and scores 4.6/5 from 47 reviews. The listing mentions entry through a separate entrance, yet it excludes the ticket, so ask the operator how entry works before you go. At about $196 for up to four, it suits a family or two couples (our review).
The private Taormina city sights walk is a two-hour private tour from Porta Messina, about $157 per person, and the guide goes into the theatre with you. The listing quotes about €10 for the ticket on the spot, below the current €14. It has 12 reviews at 4.9/5, its first free date was 10 November 2026, and it does not suit wheelchair users (our review).
The historic private tour is two hours from Porta Catania for about $179 per group of up to 25, with 24 minutes at the theatre and no ticket included. The listing does not say the guide goes inside (our review).
The walking tour with theatre ticket hands you the ticket and spends 45 minutes inside, with a licensed guide. Its private option costs about $196 per person and it has only 4 reviews, so its 5.0/5 says little yet (our review).
The sunset walking tour with rooftop aperitif skips the theatre entirely. It follows Corso Umberto, the Odeon and the churches in a group of up to six, at about $157 per person (our review).
Coming off a cruise ship at Messina? The Taormina and Castelmola private tour is a driver service with two free hours in Taormina, not a guided visit. See from Messina.
Free walks and doing it yourself
We found no free walking tour among the listings we checked. The do-it-yourself version is simple: Corso Umberto runs roughly 800 metres to 1 km between Porta Messina and Porta Catania, and the theatre sits up Via del Teatro Greco, with steps, off the Corso. Pair that walk with the audio-guide ticket and you have the commentary for the part that needs it. Our one-day itinerary lays out a route.
Before you book a guide
- On every tour without entry, budget €14 per person at the gate, or nothing for under-18s.
- Check the language of your option. The theatre tour lists English and Italian only.
- Check the meeting point. Walks start at Porta Messina or Porta Catania, at opposite ends of the Corso.
- In summer, check the theatre has no show that day: set-up can close parts of the cavea. See concerts and events.
For the background a guide will cover, read our history of the theatre, and when you have a date, check dates.

"Very interesting. We learnt a lot more than just wandering around by ourselves."
"We had a noon guide tour! However, the guide did not show up until 12:35"
"Serena was our guide. She was just amazing! She was very knowledgeable and full of info. She answer all of our questions and was just a delight. Did I say there are some beautiful sights up there? Yeah, you are up for a treat. The views from the Ancient Theater are priceless. Look for Serena, she is the best!"
"Maria was well informed, great explanations and stories. Really enjoyed the tour!"
"Fantastic tour. The guide was a local archeologist and extremely knowledgeable. We were in a small group, so we could ask any question and have a very conversational tour. Stunning views and very interesting history. A must tour if you visit Taormina."

Guided Tours of the Greek Theatre: Questions
Entry, languages and private walks, checked November 2026.
Yes. The theatre ticket with a guided tour includes entry and a live guide for a listed 50 minutes, in English or Italian, from about $34 per person (checked November 2026). Reviews average 4.0/5 from 452, with complaints about late guides and short tours, so allow spare time.
Most do not. Of the walks we checked, only the walking tour with theatre ticket includes entry. The others either stop at the theatre without a ticket, so you pay €14 each at the gate, or skip it.
We did not find one among the listings we checked. For a free walk, follow Corso Umberto between Porta Messina and Porta Catania, roughly 800 metres to 1 km, and climb Via del Teatro Greco to the theatre.
For four people, a per-group private walk often costs less per head than per-person tours. The guided walking tour was about $196 for up to four (checked November 2026), plus the gate ticket. Compare per-person and per-group prices before you book.
The theatre-only tour lists English and Italian, and reviewers say groups are sometimes mixed. Private walks cover more languages, including French, German and Spanish, depending on the operator.
We do not publish one, but the route is simple: the Corso runs between the two town gates, and the theatre sits up a stepped lane off it. Our one-day itinerary gives an order for the sights.
Pick the live guide if you want to ask questions and can cope with a delay. Pick the audio-guide ticket, about $25, for a cheaper visit at your own pace. Our audio guide or guided tour page sets out the trade-offs.
