Getting to the Taormina Greek Theatre
How to reach the Taormina Greek Theatre from the train station, Giardini Naxos and the town centre: ASM bus lines, fares, the cable car and the walk up.
Taormina sits on a hill about 200 metres above the sea, and the Greek Theatre stands just off the main street, at Via del Teatro Greco 40. The route changes with where you arrive. Coaches from Catania airport stop at the Via Pirandello terminal, already up in town, and from there the theatre is about a 10-minute walk. Trains stop at Taormina-Giardini station, down at sea level, and you need a bus for the climb.
The bus is the answer for most people. ASM, the town’s transport company, runs the Linea Verde and Taormina Link buses from the station up to the centre for €2 a ride (tourist fare, checked November 2026), and the trip takes about 10 to 15 minutes. From Giardini Naxos, the Linea Gialla bus does the same climb. Do not plan to walk up with luggage.
Once you are in the centre, the last stretch is on foot: along Corso Umberto, then up Via Teatro Greco, which has steps.

From Taormina-Giardini station up to town
Taormina-Giardini station is in Giardini Naxos, on the coast, while the town centre stands at about 204 metres above sea level. The straight-line distance from the station to the bus terminal in town is about 1.3 km, but the road climbs all the way, with traffic. With bags, take the bus.
Two ASM lines serve the station. The Linea Verde runs Castelmola – Madonna della Rocca – Taormina – Taormina-Giardini station – San Vincenzo hospital, and from 1 November 2026 every trip on it runs daily, holidays included (ASM notice of 30 October 2026). The Taormina Link runs between the town centre and the station; its winter timetable has been in force since 24 November 2025. Expect about 10 to 15 minutes on board, though third-party estimates range from 5 to 20 depending on traffic.
If you come by regional train, you can buy the bus with the rail ticket. Trenitalia sells a combined fare that adds the ASM bus for €2: choose TAORMINA – ISOLA BELLA as the destination. That bus serves the Isola Bella stop on the coast, so check the ASM route for where you want to get off. For the town itself, the Linea Verde and Taormina Link stops are the ones to look for at the station.
Can you walk from the station to town? Some people do, but nobody publishes a walking time, and we have not timed it. You gain about 200 metres in height on a road shared with traffic. A taxi is the other option; we have no checked fare, so agree the price before you get in.
From Giardini Naxos to Taormina
Giardini Naxos is the town on the coast below Taormina. Two ASM lines connect it with the centre. The Linea Gialla runs Taormina centre – Trappitello – Giardini Naxos – Gaggi, and the Linea Verde goes via the railway station. Both charge the same ASM fares, and we found no published journey time for the Linea Gialla, so check ASM’s timetable for your stop.
People often search for a cable car from Giardini Naxos. There is none from Giardini itself. The Mazzarò cable car runs from Mazzarò, the bay next to Isola Bella, up to the Via Pirandello area of town. It costs €8 single, €15 return or €20 for a day pass, runs every 15 minutes, and its winter hours are 8:00 to 20:00 (8:00 to 1:30 at night in summer). The ride takes about 3 minutes. Last winter it closed for annual maintenance from 12 January to 28 March 2026, with a replacement bus, and ASM has not yet announced the 2026–27 dates.
Walking up from Giardini Naxos is a steep climb of about 200 metres. We found no reliable walking time, so treat it as a hike, not a stroll to the theatre, and skip it on a hot afternoon.
The summer Taormina Sea Line, which linked the station, Isola Bella, Mazzarò and the beaches as far as Letojanni, stopped for the season on 31 October 2026. ASM’s Linea Blu beach bus keeps a winter timetable from 1 November 2026, with the last departure from Taormina at 21:15 from Sunday to Friday and late runs at 22:00, 23:00 and 0:15 on Saturdays. Check ASM for its stops.
From the town centre to the theatre
The theatre entrance and ticket office are at Via del Teatro Greco 40. From Corso Umberto, the pedestrian main street, you turn up Via Teatro Greco and climb a short street with steps. One listing describes the theatre as a 6-minute detour from Porta Messina, the gate at one end of Corso Umberto.
From the coach terminal on Via Pirandello, we would budget about 10 minutes on foot. We have no official walking time for that route, so check it on a map before you set off, and allow longer if you walk slowly. From Porta Catania, at the far end of Corso Umberto, add the length of the street: about 800 metres to 1 km between the two gates.
Inside, the paths are stone and the seating is stepped, so wear flat shoes with grip. A visitor with a disability and one companion go in free. The park has not published a step-free route, so call the park on +39 0942 51001 before you go and read our accessibility guide.

ASM fares are from ASM; the coach and train figures come from a transfer-booking site that checked them in August 2026. Journey times are typical, not guaranteed.
ASM also sells passes, which help if you will ride more than once: two rides in the same day cost €3, a 24-hour pass €3.50, three days €7 and seven days €15 (tourist fares). An older third-party figure of €1.10 a ride still circulates; ASM’s own price is €2.
Arriving from the airport, Catania or Messina
From Catania airport, the coach is the simplest option, because it climbs into town and ends at Via Pirandello. Trains from the airport and from Catania Centrale stop at Taormina-Giardini, so you add the ASM bus. The Catania page has the fares, timetables and the Etna day trips that stop in Taormina.
From Messina, including the cruise port, trains run to Taormina-Giardini and Interbus coaches run to Taormina. The Messina page covers both and the time to budget on a port day. If your cruise ship calls at Giardini Naxos, use the Giardini section above.
Arriving by car? The old town is a limited-traffic zone, and visitors without a permit should park outside it. The parking guide lists the car parks at Lumbi, Porta Catania and Mazzarò, with the Lumbi shuttle into town.
Know before you go
- Hours: the park’s page gives 9:00 to 19:45, last entry 19:00, but the theatre closes much earlier in winter. Travel guides give about 16:00 from November to mid-February, so check the park’s notice for your date and leave time for the bus. Our opening hours guide has the detail.
- Concert days: in summer, events can restrict access or shorten hours.
- Tickets: the gate price is €14 (checked November 2026). The Ancient Theatre ticket with audio guide costs about $25 per person and saves the ticket-office queue, though you still pass the security check. The tickets page compares the two.
- First Sundays: entry is free on the first Sunday of the month, with tickets issued on site only. The next ones are 6 December 2026 and 3 January 2027; confirm the notice that month.
- Timetables: ASM changes its timetables by season, and it publishes service news on its website. Check the line you need the day before.
