Taormina Greek Theatre Opening Hours
Opening hours of the Greek Theatre in Taormina: 9:00–19:45 with last entry 19:00 on the park's page, earlier closing in winter, evening and concert days.
The Ancient Theatre of Taormina opens every day at 9:00. The park’s own page gives the closing time as 19:45, with last entry at 19:00 (checked 3 November 2026). Plan around that timetable from spring to early autumn.
Winter is different. The same page shows no separate winter timetable, yet sunset in mid-November falls at about 16:48, so the theatre closes much earlier in the cold months. Travel guides give a closing time of about 16:00 from November to mid-February. If you are visiting between November and March, check the park’s notice the day before and aim to be at the gate by early afternoon.
On summer concert days the monument can close early or follow special hours. In 2026 it stayed open until midnight only on a list of announced dates. Both change year to year, so the sections below give the dates we have and how to confirm yours.

Opening times through the year
This table puts the published hours next to what we could and could not confirm. The first row is the park’s own wording; the others carry a weaker source and say so.
| Period | Opens | Closes | Last entry | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Published hours (long days, spring to autumn) | 9:00 | 19:45 | 19:00 | Park page, checked 3 Nov 2026 |
| November to mid-February | 9:00 | about 16:00 | not published | Travel guides; not on the park page |
| Listed evening dates, summer 2026 | 9:00 | 24:00 | 23:00 | Park notice, 2026 only |
| Concert and event days | varies | can be earlier | varies | Check on the day |
The Parco Archeologico Naxos Taormina, which runs the site, is the authority for the stated hours. Taormina’s tourist board describes the rule differently: open from 9:00 until one hour before sunset, with seasonal times on the ticket seller’s site. The two fit together if you read 19:45 as the long-day timetable. In mid-June and mid-July the sun sets at about 20:21, so a 19:45 close sits comfortably before dark.
The months in between are the grey area. We found no published hours for mid-February to spring or for October. If the sunset rule applies, closing drifts earlier through the autumn: sunset is about 19:08 in mid-September and 18:22 in mid-October, after the clocks go back on 25 October 2026. Treat any visit from October to March as one to confirm the day before.
The sunset times on this page are calculated for Taormina and can be about five minutes out. They are useful for planning, not for timing your arrival to the minute.
Last entry and how much time you need
Last entry on the published hours is 19:00, 45 minutes before the 19:45 close. One reseller’s FAQ gives the same 45-minute gap for a 16:00 close, which would put winter last entry at about 15:15. That figure is not on the park’s page, so in winter arrive by 14:30 and you will not have to rush.
Forty-five minutes covers a walk round the cavea and the view over the stage. It is tight with the audio guide: reviewers of the Ancient Theatre ticket with audio guide say they spent 30 to 60 minutes inside, and the commentary takes time if you play every stop. For a relaxed visit, arrive at least an hour and a half before closing. How long to visit breaks the time down by type of ticket and tour.
Add the time to reach the gate. The theatre sits up Via del Teatro Greco from Corso Umberto, a short climb with steps, and in high season the queue at the ticket office can be long. A local blog reports waits of over an hour on summer weekends. A pre-booked ticket saves you that cash queue, though everyone still passes the security check at the entrance. Prices and the options for buying ahead are on our tickets page.
Evening openings and concert days
In summer 2026 the park opened the theatre continuously from 9:00 to 24:00, with last entry at 23:00, on these dates only:
- June: 1–5, 23 and 28
- July: 1, 2 and 13
- August: 3, 14–17, 23 and 31
- September: 20, 27 and 28, plus 26 September (European Museum Day) until midnight
The park did not publish a separate price for the evening openings. No 2027 evening dates had been announced when we checked in November 2026. The common claim that the theatre stays open until midnight every summer night is wrong; it only does so on announced dates.
Concerts work the other way. The theatre hosts shows roughly from July to September, plus events such as the Taormina Film Fest, which took over the site from 10 to 14 June 2026. A concert needs days of set-up, and parts of the site can be closed or occupied while the stage goes up. The park publishes no calendar of these set-up closures. If your visit falls in the concert season, look at the event listings for your date, plan a morning visit and check the park’s page before you set off. A daytime entry ticket never covers an evening show; concerts and events explains where show tickets are sold.
Free Sundays, holidays and Christmas
Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month. Taormina’s tourist board says tickets on those days are issued only on site, for the date and time you choose, so you cannot book them online. The next first Sundays are 6 December 2026 and 3 January 2027; the rule stands, but we had not seen the park’s notice for either month when we checked.
The tourist board also lists free entry on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. Those three dates are not on the park’s own page, so check before you plan around them.
For Christmas Day and New Year’s Day we found no official closure notice. A local blog says the theatre opens daily including holidays. That is one source, so check the park’s page in the week before. Who else gets in free or at the reduced rate is covered on the tickets page.
How to check the hours for your date
The park’s English page for the theatre is the place to start: Teatro Antico di Taormina on the regional parks site. It also links to Aditus, the park’s online ticket seller, where you can see whether your date is on sale. If something looks odd, such as a closing time later than sunset in winter, the park answers on +39 0942 51001 or at parco.archeo.naxos@regione.sicilia.it.
Notices are often posted in Italian first. The park writes the hours as “Tutti i giorni dalle 9.00 alle 19.45 (ultimo ingresso alle 19.00)”: every day from 9:00 to 19:45, last entry at 19:00. Orari means opening hours, ultimo ingresso is last entry, chiuso is closed and aperture serali are the evening openings.
Know before you go
- The 19:45 close is the published timetable. From November to mid-February, plan for about 16:00 and confirm.
- Last entry is 45 minutes before closing. In winter, arrive by 14:30.
- There is very little shade on the stepped seating. In summer, the first hour after 9:00 is the cooler and, by one local guide’s account, quieter time; best time to visit has the detail.
- Paths are stone and the cavea is stepped. Wear shoes with grip, and read accessibility if steps are a problem.
- Planning to pair the theatre with Isola Bella? The park closed the island from 2 November 2026 for maintenance and expects it back by about 15 December 2026. The boat trips around it still run; see what to see nearby.
- The Mazzarò cable car up from the beach runs 8:00 to 20:00 daily in winter, so it will not limit a daytime visit. Routes into town are on how to get there.
If your day is fixed, choose the ticket and time that fit the closing hour, then check dates for the audio-guide ticket. For a gate-or-guide decision, see audio guide or guided tour.
