Taormina Greek Theatre Parking
Where to park for the Taormina Greek Theatre: Lumbi with its shuttle, Porta Catania, Mazzarò for the cable car, what parking costs and how the ZTL works.
Park outside the old town and walk or ride the last part. Taormina’s centre is a limited-traffic zone (ZTL), and visitors without a permit should not drive into it. The town transport company, ASM, runs the public car parks around it: Lumbi, Porta Catania, Porta Pasquale, Piazzale Piano Porto, Mazzeo and Mazzarò.
For a day at the theatre, Lumbi is the easy choice. A third-party listing gives it about 965 spaces, and an ASM shuttle runs from the car park to Via Pirandello every 15 minutes. From there the theatre is roughly a 10-minute walk. Porta Catania, named for the gate at one end of Corso Umberto, puts you straight on the main street, but you walk the length of it to reach the theatre.
Prices are the weak spot. ASM brought in new parking tariffs on 1 August 2026, reported as higher for tourists, and the only per-hour figures we could read predate that change. Use them as a rough guide and check the board at the barrier.

Lumbi car park and the shuttle into town
Lumbi is the largest of ASM’s car parks in the third-party figures, at about 965 spaces, and third parties list it as open 24 hours. You leave the car there for the whole visit and ride the shuttle in.
The ASM shuttle from Lumbi runs every 15 minutes and stops at Via Pirandello, the street of the coach terminal, close to the cable car’s upper end. ASM shows no separate fare for it, and third-party sites say it is free; confirm when you pay for parking. ASM publishes the shuttle timetable by season. The summer timetable has been in force since 21 June 2025, and the winter timetable is a PDF without a date, so check the times at the car park, particularly if you plan to come back late. On special event days ASM can start it early: for a dawn show at the theatre on 1 August 2026, the shuttle began at 4:15.
From Via Pirandello, budget about 10 minutes on foot to the theatre. We found no official walking time, so check the route on a map. You walk into Corso Umberto and climb Via Teatro Greco, which has steps.
Lumbi’s phone number, from an undated listing, is +39 0942 683 801.
Porta Catania and the other ASM car parks
Porta Catania is the car park to pick if you would rather walk than take a shuttle. The third-party listing gives it about 650 spaces, open 24 hours, and it takes its name from the town gate at one end of Corso Umberto. The theatre is near the other end: the street runs about 800 metres to 1 km between Porta Catania and Porta Messina, and the turn up Via Teatro Greco is closer to the Porta Messina side. That is our reading of the distances, not a measured route, so allow 15 minutes or more on foot and check a map. The phone number, again from an undated listing, is +39 0942 683 829.
Porta Catania costs more per hour than Lumbi in every figure we have, so it suits a short stop more than a full day.
The other car parks on ASM’s list serve different needs. Mazzarò, by the beach and the cable car’s lower station, has about 180 spaces. Porta Pasquale is small, at about 75 spaces. Piazzale Piano Porto is an open-air car park of about 300 spaces that the same listing shows as seasonal, open from 1 June to 30 September between 17:00 and 2:00, with a flat evening rate. Mazzeo is on ASM’s list, but we found no details for it.
ASM’s own car-park page names the sites but gives no tariff per car park and no hours; it links to a regulation PDF instead. So the most reliable price is the one on the board when you drive in.
What parking costs
| Car park | Spaces | Low season | High season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lumbi | about 965 | €2 per 1.5 h, €20 per 24 h | €3 per 1.5 h, €23 per 24 h |
| Porta Catania | about 650 | €3 per hour, €25 per 24 h | €5 per hour, €28 per 24 h |
| Mazzarò | about 180 | not listed | not listed |
| Porta Pasquale | about 75 | not listed | not listed |
| Piazzale Piano Porto | about 300 | — | €10 flat for the evening, 1 June to 30 September |
These figures come from a third-party parking listing (Telepass), not from ASM, and they may be older than the tariffs ASM introduced on 1 August 2026. La Sicilia reported that change as cutting prices by up to 80% for residents and raising them for tourists, without giving the new figures. Expect to pay at least as much as the table shows.
What does that mean for a theatre visit? On the older Lumbi rates, three hours, enough for the theatre and a coffee on Corso Umberto, came to about €4 to €6 depending on the season, and a full day at Lumbi was capped at about €20 to €23. Porta Catania ran to about €9 to €15 for the same three hours. Both sums are our arithmetic on the table, so check the current board.
Another change may be coming: an October 2026 report described a plan to hand Taormina’s car parks to ASM under a €2.5 million annual rent, which could move prices again.
The ZTL: what it means for drivers
The old town is a zona a traffico limitato. Motor vehicles need an authorisation to enter, and visitors without one should park outside and walk in. The exceptions on the municipal rules include vehicles with a disabled permit, public transport (buses of up to 21 seats and taxis), loading from 6:00 to 9:30 on weekdays, and hotel guests, whose plates the hotel must register within 48 hours.
Those details come from an accessibility page last updated in 2012, so they may have changed. If your hotel is inside the ZTL, ask it before you arrive whether it registers your plate and where you should leave the car. The same old page names camera points at Via Dionisio, Corso Umberto by Porta Catania and Via Capuccini; we could not confirm which are active today, so assume they are.
We found no current official ZTL map and no published fine amount. Follow the ZTL signs, turn off before them, and use a car park on ASM’s list. Drivers with a disabled permit can contact the municipal office at Corso Umberto 223 (+39 0942 610 266 or 610 267) or ask the car-park cashiers, though those contact details are also from the older source.
Parking for the cable car and the coast
If you plan to see the coast as well, park at Mazzarò and ride the cable car up. It runs every 15 minutes, from 8:00 to 20:00 in winter and 8:00 to 1:30 at night in summer, and costs €8 single, €15 return or €20 for a day pass. The ride takes about 3 minutes and lands in the Via Pirandello area, about 10 minutes on foot from the theatre. Last winter the cable car closed for maintenance from 12 January to 28 March 2026, with a replacement bus, and the 2026–27 dates are not out yet. Check ASM before you rely on it in January or February.
For two adults, the return cable car alone comes to €30, more than a full day at Lumbi on the older rates, before you pay for parking at Mazzarò. It makes sense when you want the beach at Mazzarò or Isola Bella on the same day; see what to see nearby.
Is there free parking in Taormina?
We found no free public car park on ASM’s list, and we could not verify the free spaces you may read about online. If you want to avoid parking costs altogether, leave the car at your hotel and use the train and ASM bus, which costs €2 a ride from Taormina-Giardini station. Our how to get there guide has the bus lines.
Know before you go
- Hours: the theatre’s official page gives 9:00 to 19:45, last entry 19:00, but it closes much earlier in winter. Travel guides give about 16:00 from November to mid-February. Check the park’s notice for your date, and check the Lumbi shuttle’s return times against it. More in our opening hours guide.
- Tickets: the gate price is €14 (checked November 2026). The Ancient Theatre ticket with audio guide costs about $25 per person and saves the ticket-office queue, which matters if your parking meter is running. You still pass the security check.
- Concerts: on summer concert days, daytime access to the theatre can be restricted or hours shortened. See concerts and events.
- Steps: the approach from Corso Umberto has steps. Read the accessibility guide if anyone in your group has limited mobility.
If you are coming from the airport, the coach may beat driving: it stops in town, and the Catania page has the fares. For the day itself, see how long to visit, and when you know your date, check tickets on the tickets page.
