Taormina: Ancient Theater Skip-the-Line Ticket & Audio Guide

4.5 (3,161 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This is an entry ticket to the Ancient Theatre of Taormina (Teatro Antico di Taormina) with an audio guide, and nothing else. Theatre admission is included: the listing’s includes list opens with the skip-the-line entry ticket, and the ticket allows a single entry. There is no live guide. You walk the site at your own pace and listen as you go.

According to the listing, the Greek Theatre is the largest building for shows in the Italian peninsula after the one in Syracuse. It was laid out around the 3rd to 2nd century BC and took its present form under the Romans, in the time of Trajan or Hadrian. Later it became an amphitheatre in the age of Caracalla, with the orchestra turned into an arena. From the seats you look over the coast and, on a clear day, Mount Etna.

What skip-the-line means here is that you buy the ticket in advance, so you do not queue at the ticket office to pay. It is not a promise of an empty entrance. Everyone still passes a security check, and several reviewers report being sent to a window to swap the QR code for a paper ticket. A few reviewers also found no real queue in quieter months, so the advantage is small outside the busy season.

The audio guide is the part to read carefully. The listing mentions a multi-language audio app, but reviewers describe a handheld device handed out at the site, and several say the staff asked them to leave a physical photo ID (a passport or driving licence) in exchange. Bring the original, not a copy. Without it, some visitors were refused the audio guide.

From about $25 per person (checked November 2026). The listing splits the price as a 16 euro adult ticket valid until 1 July, 5 euros for the audio guide, and the remainder as the booking fee. Ticket office prices may have changed since, so check the current adult fare before deciding whether booking ahead saves you anything.

Highlights

  • Look over the coast and sea from the upper seats

  • Spend as long as you like inside, as the listing sets no time limit
  • Listen to the commentary in the language you pick, from four offered

Good to Know & Caveats

  • The audio guide may require a physical photo ID left at the desk, according to many reviewers. A copy was refused. The booking page mentions ID only in small print, so carry the original.
  • You pass a security check before entering the archaeological site.
  • The ticket allows one entry only, so you cannot leave and come back.
  • Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, per the listing. Buying this ticket that day gains you little beyond the audio guide.
  • Some reviewers say there was no real queue in quieter months, and that buying at the gate would have cost less.
  • The theatre is used for concerts and festivals. Reviewers mention stages, lights, plastic seating or a film-festival screen blocking part of the view, and some early closures for private events.
  • The listing names summer evening openings, with last entry at 10:30 pm on those dates. Hours change on special dates, so check the day you pick.

Meeting Point

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.5/5 by 3,161 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

I thought it might be overrated as every review I read raved about it. Turns out they were right! An absolute must see. Opens at 9 so be waiting. After 10 it will be packed. We were able to take loads of photos without many people in them.

Great views and historical value with the audio guide. I would prefer headphones rather than holding the recorder because it’s hard to take pictures at the same time.

Highly recommend getting the audio guide to better understand the Ancient theatre and the history behind it. They also offer a children’s audio guide. My 10 year old found it very informative and entertaining! Such a wonderful experience
