Where to Stay

Where to Stay in Taormina for the Greek Theatre

Sleep within a walk of the theatre gate.

  • 11–17 Min Corso Umberto to Theatre
  • €8 Cable Car Mazzarò Up to Town
  • 3 Nov 2026 Prices & Fees Checked

Stay in the old town, on or near Corso Umberto: the theatre entrance on Via del Teatro Greco is 11 to 17 minutes on foot from anywhere along it, and you can walk back after dinner. Stay at Mazzarò or Isola Bella if you want the beach, and ride the cable car up. Giardini Naxos, a bus ride below, costs less than the old town for the same night, and Grand Hotel Timeo, opposite the theatre, is the splurge. The old town is a limited-traffic zone, so if you drive, choose a hotel with parking or park outside the center. The theatre ticket and the walking tours do not collect from hotels, so the walk from your room is part of the visit.

Hotel facts, parking charges and prices were read on Booking.com on 3 November 2026; walk and drive times are free-flow route estimates, and the town’s hills and steps make walks feel longer. We earn a commission if you book through our links, at no extra cost to you.

Three picks, one per style of trip

A good-value hotel a short walk from the theatre, a beach hotel at Isola Bella, or the hotel opposite the theatre gate. Each price is the lowest nightly rate Booking.com showed for 19–20 May 2027, two adults, shown as including taxes and fees; the parking charges further down come on top.

The theatre ticket with audio guide has no meeting point: you redeem it at the entrance. MySicilyGuide’s guided walking tour starts at Porta Catania, and Prestelli’s sunset walk and SAT Group’s cooking class meet at Porta Messina. Escursioni Pizzichella’s Isola Bella boat trip leaves from its lido at Isola Bella. The Etna and Taormina day trips, such as Etna Experience’s tour with lunch, collect in Catania, not Taormina.

Old town and Corso Umberto: walk to the theatre

This is the base for a theatre visit. Corso Umberto runs between Porta Messina and Porta Catania, and Via del Teatro Greco climbs to the entrance from the Porta Messina end, with some steps. From a hotel here you can be at the gate when it opens at 9:00, which one travel guide calls the quietest hour, and walk home after an evening on the Corso. The trade-offs are the hills, higher rates and the limited-traffic zone: without a permit you cannot drive in, so check the parking line on the listing before you book.

Hotel Bel Soggiorno (mid-range) is on Via Pirandello, about 9 minutes on foot from the theatre, with sea-view rooms, a sun terrace and parking on site at €25 a day. Hotel Victoria (mid-range) is family-run and sits on Corso Umberto itself, about 1,000 feet from the theatre by its listing; it has no parking. Hotel Villa Schuler (upper) has its own terraced botanical garden with steps down to the Corso, and garage parking at €25 a day. Hotel Condor (mid-range), near Porta Messina, has a sea-view breakfast terrace and a minimum check-in age of 18. Grand Hotel Timeo (luxury) faces the theatre, with an outdoor pool and a spa. Condor and Villa Schuler showed no rooms for 19 May 2027 when we checked, so popular dates are already filling. See all stays in Taormina.

Mazzarò and Isola Bella: the beach below

Mazzarò Bay and Isola Bella lie at the foot of the cliff, and the Mazzarò cable car links them to Via Pirandello in about 3 minutes. Grand Hotel Timeo’s listing puts the upper station about 250 yards from the hotel, so the theatre is a short walk from the top. A single costs €8 and a return €15, and the cars run from 8:00 to 20:00 on the winter timetable and until 1:30 on the summer one. Walking up instead is about 1.7 km and 22 minutes of climbing.

The cable car in winter

ASM closed the cable car for annual maintenance from 12 January to 28 March 2026 and ran a replacement bus. The 2027 dates were not announced when we checked, so a winter stay down here depends on the bus or a taxi. The Isola Bella reserve itself is closed from 2 November to about 15 December 2026 for maintenance, the park says; the boat trips do not land on the island anyway.

La Plage Resort (upper) sits on its own beach inside the Isola Bella nature reserve, with free parking, about 9 minutes on foot from the cable car. Hotel Isola Bella (mid-range) faces the bay and has a panoramic outdoor pool. Jonic Hotel Mazzarò (budget) is about 100 yards from the lower cable-car station; neither of these two has parking. Villa Sant’Andrea, A Belmond Hotel (luxury) has a private beach and a pool on Mazzarò Bay, opposite the cable car, and also had no rooms for our May date. See all stays in Mazzarò.

Giardini Naxos: lower rates, a bus ride away

Giardini Naxos is the beach town south of Taormina, home to the Naxos archaeological park, and for our May night its seafront hotels came in under the old-town rates. The theatre is about 13 minutes’ drive uphill, or a ride on ASM’s Linea Gialla bus; a tourist single costs €2 and two rides on the same day €3. Blue Sicily Group’s boat tour with an aperitif at Isola Bella leaves from Via Calcide Eubea, in Giardini itself. The trade-off is evenings: you plan the ride back from Corso Umberto.

Hotel Palladio (mid-range) is in a historic building on the seafront, a few steps from the beach, with parking at €15 a day nearby. Hellenia Yachting Hotel & SPA (upper) is on the beach at the southern end of town, with an outdoor pool and a spa; parking costs €15 a night from April to October and is not guaranteed. B&B Triskèles (budget) is about 500 m from the beach, with free public parking nearby and a minimum check-in age of 18. See all stays in Giardini Naxos.

Castelmola: a quiet village above

Castelmola is a separate hill village above Taormina, quieter at night, with wide views over the coast. The theatre end of town is about 13 minutes’ drive away, and ASM’s Linea Verde bus runs between the two. The footpath is steep: the walking route is about 2.7 km, and the 15-minute walk some guides quote is a straight-line figure.

Hotel Villa Sonia (upper) is about 200 yards from the village center by Booking.com’s count, with an outdoor pool, a restaurant with views of the sea and Etna, and parking at €10 a day. See all stays in Castelmola.

Taormina-Giardini station: for trains and late arrivals

The station sits at sea level in Villagonia, between Taormina and Giardini Naxos, and it is the stop for trains from Catania and Messina. Trains from Catania Centrale take 36 minutes to just over an hour, and ASM’s Linea Verde bus and the Taormina Link shuttle run up to town for €2. The theatre is about 10 minutes uphill by car. The Interbus and Etna Trasporti coaches from Catania airport do not stop here: they end at the Via Pirandello terminal in town, after 80 to 90 minutes, and on a mid-November weekday the last one left the airport at 19:45.

Hotel Pensione Cundari (budget) is about 300 yards from the station, with free parking on site; reception checks guests in until 20:00, so tell them if your train is late. It showed $88 for our May night. See all stays near the station. If you land late, a night down here and the bus up the next morning is simpler than a taxi up the hill with luggage.

Should you split the stay?

With two or three nights, pick one base. The old town covers the theatre, and the cable car or the bus covers the coast; moving hotels costs half a day to save a 10-minute ride. With four nights or more and a beach in the plan, two bases can make sense: old town first, for the theatre at opening time and the evenings on the Corso, then Mazzarò or Giardini Naxos for the sea and the boat trips. If you leave by train, end in Giardini or by the station; if you leave on the airport coach, which starts from Via Pirandello, end in the old town.

All five areas on one map

The map opens on Taormina, with Mazzarò and Isola Bella to the east, Castelmola on the hill to the northwest and Giardini Naxos to the south. Pick your dates in the map for live prices.

Booking tips

Book the room early for May to September, then the ticket. Three of the hotels we read had no rooms on Booking.com for a Wednesday in May 2027, six months ahead. The theatre ticket is easy to hold: the GetYourGuide ticket has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and the park sells its own €14 ticket at the gate. The published hours are 9:00 to 19:45, last entry 19:00, but the theatre closes much earlier in winter, so check the park’s notice for your date.

If you drive, ask the hotel about the limited-traffic zone before you arrive. An older municipal rule lets hotel guests register their plate, but check the current arrangement with your hotel, and otherwise park outside the center: ASM runs a shuttle every 15 minutes from the Lumbi car park. ASM’s parking tariffs changed on 1 August 2026; our parking guide has the car parks.

Read on each Booking.com listing on 3 November 2026, for two adults and one room, signed out. Booking.com showed every rate as including taxes and fees and named no separate city tax on these listings, so confirm the total at checkout. Two nights at Hotel Palladio cost $374 against $460 at Bel Soggiorno; with a car, add €30 or €50 for parking, and from Giardini, two people riding the bus up and back each day add €12 over two days (our arithmetic).
